John Smith - Live at the Lowry 2006

John Smith - Acoustic genius

A very fitting support act for John Martyn, John Smith last night demanded the attention of a packed Lyric Theatre at the Lowry Centre, Salford Quays, Manchester. One chair, one spotlight, one acoustic guitar and one very talented musician!

John Smith doesn’t so much “play” the guitar as “use” it. His style of music is a very laid back folk music with husky, morose vocals (reminiscent of Damien Rice, David Gray and Gomez singer Ian Ball). His use of the guitar is highly inventive at times using it a percussion instrument and supplying his own bass tones by tweaking the machine heads as he plays. Perhaps the hilghlight of the show is his song “winter” in which he “uses” the guitar flat across his knees (playing it as a dulcimer would be played).

John Smith seems like a real down to earth guy who deserves every success he gets. He was “out front” with the fans, signing copies of his album “The fox and the monk” at the interval and after the show. I recommend anyone who is into Acoustic, Folk, Blues or whatever you want to call it, to buy a copy of his album - it won’t dissapoint!
