Google drops to 3rd in Alexa global rankings
Search Engine Round Table reported that Google has dropped from 2nd place to 3rd in the Alexa top 500 sites. This is a significant shift which puts the top three global players on the web in the following order:
People who think that Google’s world dominance will never end should probably cast an eye over this list. Whilst Alexa traffic data does not show us the whole picture (its based on traffic, not number of searches) and doubts have been cast over the accuracy and methodologies of the Amazon owned company, it still gives us a broad indication of whats going on!
Here in the UK of course, the search landscape is still dominated by the big G, with Hitwise recently reporting that Google handles 2 out of every 3 UK searches. How long things will stay this way though, I think is now up for genuine debate.
Over the last 12 months or so, I have discussed Google’s dominance with many people. Most seem to rubbish the idea that some other search company will one day be top of the pile, often citing Google’s simplicity, accuracy and open approach to development as the things that will keep them top indefinitely. I think this latest list from Alexa begins to suggest otherwise!
