On page optimisation - keyphrase placement priorities

What’s the most important place on a page for keyphrases in SEO?

This is a question I am often asked regarding on page optimisation. When a search engine algorithm ranks a page, where are the most ‘powerful’ places the search phrase can appear? In order of importance, this is a list of what I believe are the most important places to put your keyphrases when optimising a webpage:

  1. The domain name.
  2. The filepath (ie; everything after the domain name)
  3. The <title> tag
  4. The first couple of lines immediately following the opening <body> tag
  5. <h1> - <h6> heading tags, <h1> being most relevant.
  6. Text that appears within <a> tags
  7. Text that forms part of a list (<ul> and <ol> tags)
  8. Text that appears inside <em> and <strong> tags
  9. Text inside <p> tags
  10. Image descriptions such as alt, title and longdesc attributes
  11. Text that appear in <meta> tags such as keyword and description

Now obviously, this is just a guide. Every search engine has different algorithms, some search engines completely ignore <meta> tags and getting keyphrases to appear in your domain name can be a big ask, but generally speaking - these are the most important places you can put your keywords. If you can get your keywords to appear in all these places without making your page too spammy (ie; the keyword density for your chosen keyphrase gets too high) - all the better!
