On page optimisation - keyphrase placement priorities
What’s the most important place on a page for keyphrases in SEO?
This is a question I am often asked regarding on page optimisation. When a search engine algorithm ranks a page, where are the most ‘powerful’ places the search phrase can appear? In order of importance, this is a list of what I believe are the most important places to put your keyphrases when optimising a webpage:
- The domain name.
- The filepath (ie; everything after the domain name)
- The
<title>tag - The first couple of lines immediately following the opening
<body>tag <h1>-<h6>heading tags,<h1>being most relevant.- Text that appears within
<a>tags - Text that forms part of a list (
<ul>and<ol>tags) - Text that appears inside
<em>and<strong>tags - Text inside
<p>tags - Image descriptions such as
alt, titleandlongdescattributes - Text that appear in
<meta>tags such askeywordanddescription
Now obviously, this is just a guide. Every search engine has different algorithms, some search engines completely ignore <meta> tags and getting keyphrases to appear in your domain name can be a big ask, but generally speaking - these are the most important places you can put your keywords. If you can get your keywords to appear in all these places without making your page too spammy (ie; the keyword density for your chosen keyphrase gets too high) - all the better!
