Atlas is dead long live the Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX Extensions

It doesn’t quite roll off the tongue does it?

Microsoft have renamed their AJAX bolt-on for ASP.NET 2.0 from Atlas to the Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX Extensions. Beta 1 has now been released for public consumption.

Anyone wondering what AJAX is should check out this wiki article.

Scott Guthrie has a good write up on whats new and whats changed. Some of the more immediate advantages I can see are that the size of the javascript file(s) sent to the client have been greatly reduced and they have added Safari as an officially supported browser (Yes - the MacOS browser), who’da thunk it? The assemblies for MAAE now install into the GAC which is going to cause all manner of problems for people who don’t have direct control of their hosting environment or who simply don’t know what the GAC is.

I look forward to trying this beta out and hopefully drawing ever nearer to being able to use AJAX properly in production .NET web apps!
